Some people just need to be right. You’ve seen them. They will argue and argue and rant and rave until you concede. Most of us, will either concede or agree to disagree, unless the loss of not agreeing is worse than the agreement itself.
Consider you are a lonely isolated person. You have an interest. The internet allows you, for the first time in your life, access to others who share this interest. You are enamoured with the creator of your interest. It is such a special thing that they give you any attention. You cannot believe that you are in their company, albeit, by the virtual nature of the internet.
This person tells you things. Special things. You feel like you are in their lounge room, having coffee with them. That you are friends. At last you have a friend. You are getting people around you to talk to. To help you. To support you. You are not alone.
This person has been wronged. They tell you lots more things. Stretching the absolute truth to garnish dots of information until they form the picture that proves that they are right. They are right. They are right. You must believe them. See? All of this adds up to my truth.
You feel for them. How could this have happened? People are horrible. This is true. People are horrible, but they are horrible for an agenda.
You are convinced. The person who has given you so much, has been wronged. You cannot bear to be put back out into the cold of what your life was before this wonderful thing came into it and all the wonderful people you have met because of it. You belong somewhere now. And to belong means you have to agree.
If you don’t agree and support you are OUT.
So, even if you don’t agree, even if there is some doubt, you will agree that they are right. Your need to believe they are right, is far greater than any truth imaginable.
This is the manipulation. Your weakness. Your need to belong. Your need to be on the right side. They are right. You are right to believe them. They would never lie to you, would they?
Yes they would. Because their need to be right is far greater than anything you can possibly imagine.
